You’re exactly right. VT doesn’t have the finances...
that schools like UVa, UNC, etc have to offset bad football. They aren’t dependent on a successful football team to fund their athletic departments to be competitive. However, VT doesn’t have that luxury. Football funds the entire athletic department at VT, and if ticket sales and donations suffer, everything takes a major hit.
I’m pretty involved in Hokie Club stuff and I get the finances involved. Finally, they are coming out of the Stone Age and improving a lot of things that held us behind (I.e. targeting alumni for donations & modernizing their approach.). The hope is the ACC Network will take off and provide a lot of revenue. We haven’t gotten to enjoy what the B1G and SEC have in terms of money but hopefully that changes somewhat. VT really could use that TV money anyway, but especially if football is going through a hardship.
